| Bentleigh East, 17km southeast of the city, has several schools and a vibrant shopping strip on Centre Rd.
Bentleigh East was selected as MELBOURNE'S most livable suburb in 2008. Criteria included affordability, diversity, jobless rate and crime. Many so-called "elite" suburbs were culled at the outset because they simply cost too much.
Panelists were Herald Sun editor-in-chief Bruce Guthrie, Channel 7 newsreader Peter Mitchell, 3AW presenter and Herald Sun columnist Neil Mitchell and Committee for Melbourne CEO Sally Capp. Neil Mitchell said Bentleigh East was his top choice because of its parks, train stations, low unemployment and strong sense of community. "It is most impressive on crime, which perhaps reasserts the community strength," he said. Ms Capp said Bentleigh East scored very well on access to hospitals, education, recreation and shopping.
The magnet at the hub of all this action is McKinnon Secondary College, which last year attained its long-held ambition to be the state system's top non-selective-entry VCE school, measured by the number of subject scores over 40.
